When we get home, could you get me a nice warm outfit?

(watching Dora)

Boots: Do you want to play drums in the big drum parade?
Claire: No.

Boots: Do you want to play with animals at the animal center?
Claire: Yeah.

(Alex is in swim class.)

Alex (to Miss Kelly): May I go now?

Alex (to Miss Kelly): What’s your name?

Alex (to a classmate): What’s your name?

Alex (later, speaking to the same classmate): What was your name again?
Alex: What was your name again?
Alex: What was your name again?
Alex: What was your name again?
Alex: What was your name again?

Alex (later, speaking to Daddy): Daddy? Daddy! That boy’s name is Chris, Daddy!
Daddy: Yeah?
Alex: Yeah.

(in the car on the way home from swim class)
Alex: When we get home, could you get me a nice warm outfit?

(Alex is counting tomatoes – properly!)
Alex (pointing as he goes): One, two, three, four, five.
Daddy: Good! Alex can count now!
Mommy: Good!
Alex: I like to count tomatoes.

(dinner)

Mommy: What did you do at swim practice?
Alex: Um, I float on my back, I float on my tummy, and I swim like that, and (mumble), and we didn't do the board.
Mommy: Good!
Alex: And we blow bubbles!

(Alex and Claire start shaking their arms around, doing a little dance at the table. After a short while, Daddy and Mommy join in. Claire laughs. Alex laughs and passes gas. Everyone dances some more. Then Alex stops dancing.)
Alex: Let's take a break.
