Claire: Cassette?
Alex: What’s a tape cassette?
Daddy: It’s like a CD player.
Alex: Oh.

(Lunch. Alex is eating a squeeze yogurt.)
Alex: How do they make these yogurts? Because, that’s [indicating Claire’s cup of yogurt] how yogurts are, in bowls. I don’t know how they make squeeze yogurt.

Alex (out of the blue): Uh, is landfill the dump?
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: Oh.

(Alex cleaned up the playroom.)
Alex: I clean up a lot of stuff sometimes.

Alex: I think I like all of it.

(This sequence is not verbatim.)

(Daddy is doing Claire’s har.)
Daddy (to Claire): When you grow up, you can do your little girl’s hair.
Alex (in a deep voice): Thanks for the Diet Coke.
Alex (laughing): I’m a daddy.
Claire: But we don’t have kids when we grow up, because you (mumble).
Alex: Well you’ll find kids.

Alex: When we grow up, will you [referring to Mommy and Daddy] have the same faces?
Daddy: Yeah.

Alex: But Grandpa had different faces.

Daddy: Why did you think Grandpa had different faces?
Alex: I just thought he might have growed a new face.

My wish didn’t come true.

Claire: Mommy, all the days when I’m walking, at home – in home, I never get tired.

Claire (running around the kitchen): I’m gonna get my energy out!

Daddy: Children. Children. Time to go upstairs, children!
Claire: Daddy, we’re not children, we’re kids!

(Alex wants to go outside and wish on a shooting star. Mommy explains that shooting stars are rare, but that Alex can wish on the first star he sees tonight. Alex and Claire go outside.)

I want somebody who’s real that can walk by themselves to be with me.

(Mommy tells Claire and Alex that they will visit the Montessori school tomorrow, but that Claire will have to stay with Mommy while Alex visits a class.)
Claire (sadly): I wanna go in the class.
Mommy: I'm sorry, it's only for kindergartners. It's only for five-year-olds.
Claire (sadly): I wanna be five.
Alex: Well, you're growing every day!
Claire (sadly): But Alex growed so fast.

(Claire is in bed and is scared. She asks for Mommy or Daddy to sleep on her floor. Daddy tells her that she has her friends – Piglet, Happy, Big Puppy – in her room to take care of her.)
Claire: But they can’t walk by themselves. I want somebody who’s real that can walk by themselves to be with me.

Now another state is getting ready to play. Because our state is so dark.

Claire: I have a sword.
Alex: Don't get my stickers!  Don't get my stickers!
Claire: I'm not.  I'm just gonna find a bad person, and shoot them.

Claire: Mommy, when Daddy was making something for us, when he was making spaghetti… he got the wrong cheese for us!  He got the wrong sprinkle!
Mommy: Oh!
Claire: He got the big ball.
Mommy: Oh, did you like that?
Claire: Yeah.
Alex (to Daddy): It's okay.

(dinner)

Claire: Daddy?  Now another state is getting ready to play.  Because our state is so dark.

(Alex and Claire are watching Science Kid.)
Alex: Daddy, we're gonna see a person we haven't seen before.  We're gonna see Gabriella's mom.

Claire: Daddy?
Daddy: Yes?
Claire: How do you make the moon and the sun?
Daddy: Um… you don't have to make them, because they're already there.
Claire: Oh.
(Pause.)
Claire: Then how do you make a TV?

(Alex asked if there were people in the Mickey Mouse costumes. Mommy said yes. He didn’t say anything more about it, but seemed vaguely disappointed at the realization.)

Mommy, I don't want that big, uh, brown thing in my hamburger.

(Claire and Alex are role-playing, and they have to take Claire's baby doll to the hospital.)
Alex: We'll see you later, baby.  The doctor -- the… hospitaler -- will take care of you.  Bye.

Alex: Why do you have to wait for your food in a restaurant?
Daddy: They have to make it.
Alex: Don't they just, already have it out?
Daddy: No, 'cause then it would just sit there and get cold.
Alex: The what?
Daddy: It would just sit there and get cold.
Alex: Oh.
(Pause.)
Alex: Just tell them to make all the food at one time, and then, and then give everybody what they want.  'Kay?
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Tell the restaurant.

(Alex is excited about going to indoor soccer.)
Alex: I'm wearing my fast shoes, so I can get the ball from somebody!

Mommy: But Sweetie, that's the hamburger!

Alex: I bet the people in Florida are really happy!  Because they live close to Disney World, and they can go to Disney World whenever they want!

Claire: Mommy, you wanna see something cool?  You wanna see something cool?
Mommy: Okay.
Claire: I ate it all!

(dinner)

Claire: Mommy, when was I a big sister and Alex was a baby?

Claire: Daddy?  You have to listen to your body, and you have to listen to people!

Alex: I have a big, big giant tummy.

Claire (pointing at the table in front of her): This is a big mess.

Who growed seeds?

Claire: Daddy, I know how to grow things. You put seeds in the ground, then you put a carrot in, then you water it, then you go back in your house and go to sleep, and wait for it to grow.

Claire: Who growed seeds? Who grows seeds?

Alex: Daddy, if you don’t have somebody’s phone number, why can’t you just make it on the phone?

Daddy: How would you make it?
Alex: With the buttons. Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep. And then call them. And say “Hi!” How do you do that? You can’t do it, because, if you don’t have, a phone number, that’s theirs, why can’t you just – write it, with the numbers?

Claire: You like flowers, so you have to hold a flower.

(Claire shows Daddy her picture.)
Claire: Daddy, it’s from Claire, and it’s for Mommy, ‘cause she is feeling sick.
Daddy: Oh, you’re so sweet.
Claire: And look on the front.
Daddy: Oh, what’s she holding?

Claire (whispering very quietly): We have a peanut allergy.

Daddy: Ohhh. Why not?
Alex: ‘Cause I liked seeing Mickey.

(The plane is approaching Richmond.)

Claire: When are we going to Disney again?

Claire: Daddy, when are we going to California?

(driving home in the car)

Alex: I had fun here.
Claire: Me too.
Alex: And now I wanna go home and rest.
Claire: And I'm gonna tell my friends all about it.

Claire: I wanna go home and pet my doggie.

Alex: I hope they like the transportation I went on.

Alex: Just going across it, and going on a different road? Did he do that?
Claire: No. (inaudible) It was a tiny straight one, it was just (inaudible) this way, no I mean this way, and it was so tiny, and we went over it.
Claire: Well, Claire, we went, that’s weird, just, I don’t know what that’s for if you just want to get on a different road’s just, I don’t know why.

Claire: I know what you should do!
Alex: What?
Claire: Shouldn’t bump into another car.
Alex: What if it’s an accident? If a bad guy does that. Only bad guys do that, then they put them in jail, or give them a ticket. If they do that.
Claire: Alex, when a policeman does – no, when a bad guy does, something to a car, um, the… um… policeman

Alex: Okay. I forget it.
(Claire says something very quietly.)
Alex: What? What?
Claire: The policeman come and put you in jail.
Alex: Uh, I heard you. I heard you now.
Alex: I heard you. That he puts you in jail.

Claire: Is this the highway?
Mommy: No, not yet.
Claire: Oh.
(Pause.)
Claire: But we were going fast.
Mommy: Yeah.
(Pause.)
Claire: Mommy, how do you make your car go fast?
Mommy: You press on the gas pedal.
Claire: Oh.

Claire: What’s this road called?
Mommy: Two ninety-five.
Alex: And this is the highway. Because we’re going faaaaaaast.

Alex: Well, I did a little bit.
Claire: I did a little bit too.
Alex: I – I was worried right from the lightning, and the rain, but, uh…
Claire: I was scared of the storm.

Alex (laughing): Yeah.
(Long pause.)
Claire: He really loves honey!
Claire: He really, really, really loves honey!

(Claire is telling Daddy not to rest his hand on the back of Mommy’s seat.)
Alex: Claire, worry about yourself.
Claire: What?
Alex: Worry about yourself.
Claire: I can’t hear you.
Alex: Worry about yourself.
Claire: I can’t hear still.
Alex: Worry about yourself.
Claire: Yell.
Alex: Worry about yourself.
Claire: Do it a little louder!
Alex (whining): Mommy? Claire keeps doing that!
Mommy: I know.
Claire: And I can’t hear you.
Alex (whining): I know she can hear me, because, I’m talking in my regular voice.
Claire: Alex, you’re whining though, I can’t hear you when you’re whining.
Daddy: Claire Bear. Let’s just, not talk about that. You wanna talk about something else?
Claire: Yeah.
Daddy: What?
Claire: Uh… I don’t know.
Alex: Or we could play a game.
Daddy: Yup.
Claire: Play a game! How ‘bout I pick the thing that we’re gonna do. How ‘bout we find… a (inaudible)? How ‘bout we find a taxi?
Daddy: Okay, let’s find a taxi.
Alex: Now, Daddy has to find it before time’s up. Daddy has to find it –
Claire: Why does Daddy have to find it? I thought all of us have to find it.
Alex: Well, how ‘bout Mommy and Daddy do that, and, and you can tell us what to find, and I’ll tell you when it – when time’s up. If you haven’t found it, that’s too bad, if you did find it, that’s good.
Claire: All right. I’ll tell the thing right now, ‘kay?
Alex: Okay.
Claire: Let’s find – we shouldn’t tell a car because, it’s easy, right?
Alex: Yeah.
Claire: How ‘bout… … how ‘bout a taxi?
Alex: Okay.
Claire: Somebody find a taxi!
Alex: Go!
Claire: Go!

Alex: Time’s almost up.

Alex: Uh-oh.
Claire: What?
Alex: Just one minute left!

Alex: Time’s up!

Alex: All right. Let’s play again!
Claire: Then let’s find a sign.
Alex (laughing): Hey, that’s too easy! Time’s up!

Alex: It’s a pulley, like we saw in Sid the Science Kid!

Alex: Can we really build a tree house in our yard, Daddy?
Daddy: Well, we don’t have a tree that’s big enough. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tree that’s that big, except the one in the other park.
Alex: Well, how ‘bout we take it home, in a truck?

(Someone has a tee shirt with M&Ms pictured on it.)
Claire: Daddy, you can’t eat those on the back of his shirt.

Claire: Alex, these knees feel better. Look at them.

Alex: I wanna get out of her, I wanna get out. Daddy, do you know how to get out?
Daddy: Follow Mommy.
Claire: Mommy, Mommy, it’s just lights, right?
Mommy: Yeah.
Claire: See Alex, it’s not scary. See, we’re going out. It’s not scary.

Claire: I wanted to go across the barrel bridge again!

Claire: I loved that – I love the two tunnels.

(Alex is really looking forward to giving Mickey the pictures he and Claire drew.)
Alex: But Daddy, how will he know whose is whose?

Alex: We get to stay up for fireworks!

Claire: Alex, Mickey’s gonna stay up, because, he has to stay open, because, we have to give him... our, cards!!

Claire (to Mommy): Are you and Daddy not allergic to peanuts?

Claire: Mommy? I know the best thing that you shouldn't do with peanuts. You shouldn't look at them.

Alex: And here's the important thing: if somebody does not know, you get a grown-up.

(Mommy tells Alex about Aidan’s severe food allergies.)
Alex: I feel bad for him.

Alex: Mommy?
Mommy: Yeah?
Alex: Can I draw a picture for him?
Mommy: Yeah.

Claire: And Daddy, Minnie is my friend. ’Cause I like her, ’cause I like her pretty dress.

(in bed)
Claire (grinning happily): Daddy, Piglet, at the restaurant, was there, and I had my Piglet, and he came over to the table, and, he had Piglet, and they’re friends, ‘cause he was Piglet, and she was Piglet.

All I wanna do is take a nap.

(Alex and Claire are playing with new stuffed animals: Piglet and Minnie Mouse.)
Alex: Soon, can we marry them?
Claire: Yeah. This is today… and we can marry them… today!

(breakfast at Cinderella’s castle)

Claire: Slow down, Daddy!

Claire: I wished for a pink baby.
Daddy: You wished for a pink baby?
Claire: No. Purple and pink baby.

(Belle visits our table.)
Claire: Daddy, did we watch that show, Beauty and the Beast?

(A princess has on a yellow dress.)
Claire (showing Daddy a forkful of scrambled eggs): This is yellow, like her dress!

Claire: Ariel’s my favorite princess.

(washing hands in the public bathroom)
Alex: I like these things, ‘cause you don’t have to turn the water on after you get soap.
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: You just put your hands under it, and you’re done.

(It’s only midday at the Magic Kingdom, and Alex is already tired and grouchy.)
Alex: I want peace and quiet.

Claire: I wanna see if the merry-go-round line is too long.
Daddy: Let’s go to the merry-go-round right now.
Claire: Okay.
Alex (grouchily): All I wanna do is take a nap.

(riding It’s A Small World)

Alex (laughing): A crocodile with an umbrella!

Claire (many times): Look!

Claire: Look, flowers!

Alex (many times): Wow!

Claire: That’s on the ceiling! That’s funny!

Claire (entering every new room): Another small world!

Claire: Look at his hat, he’s turning all around!
Alex: Look at those girls dancing!
Claire: Birdie! Look!
Alex: Look, they have maracas!
Claire: Mommy! What’s that thing?
Mommy: Kangaroo?
Claire: Yeah! It is a kangaroo!

Alex: Look, a castle!
Claire: Oh that’s a ferris, that’s a wheel!
Alex: And a cowboy!
Claire: Another ferris wheel!
Alex: Look he’s throwing a lasso!

Alex: Little Bo Peep and more ducks!
Alex (singing along with the Small World music): Quack, quack quack quack, quack, quack quack… quack, quack quack quack --
Alex: Oh we’re gonna come out, Claire. Look!

Mommy: That was neat.
Claire: Yeah, but now it’s over.
Mommy: Yeah, it’s over.
Claire: But I wanna do it again.

Daddy: What did you think, Claire? Say what you thought.
Claire: I like it.
Daddy: What did you think, Alex?
Alex: I liked it.
Claire: Can I do it again? I like it!
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: I like it.
Alex: I like it!

Alex: I like that ride.
Claire: I love that one.
Alex: Because you can see people that were long, long ago, in Virginia. Some people who were here long, long ago. Some people who were here long, long ago. We saw those people. Didn’t we, Daddy?
Daddy: Yeah we did!

Look! Andy’s room! That, is, so, cool!

Claire (excitedly, spotting Ariel): Ariel!!

Claire: Look, that’s Ariel!

(At the restaurant, Claire and Alex visit with the Disney Junior characters, and now the characters are dancing.)
Claire: Can I go dance with them?

(after dancing)
Claire (throwing her fist in the air): I’m a pirate!

Claire: Look, monkeys!

Claire: Mommy, a long time ago, we had monkeys, and we could hang them on their tails.

Alex: When can we go back to the hotel and play with toys?

(Waiting in line for the Toy Story ride.)

(We discuss what kind of toy we’ll be. Alex will be Buzz Lightyear. Daddy will be Woody.)
Claire: I’m a ballerina doll baby, and I’m purple and pink and green.

Alex: I am so excited. I’m really excited. Yippee!

Alex: We’re gonna be toys in Andy’s room.

Alex: Look! Andy’s room! That, is, so, cool!

Alex: Look at Andy’s room! Look his pencil blocks! Look, his big pencil blocks!

Alex: Look at the big books!
Daddy: Yeah!
Alex: They’re huge!

Alex: And there’s his toy box. His big toy box.
Daddy: Yeah!
Alex: I hope he doesn’t come out and put him in there.
(Daddy laughs.)
Alex (to Mommy): I hope Andy doesn’t come out and put us in that toy box.

(after the Toy Story ride)

Alex: I liked Andy’s room, can we go back?

Claire: Daddy, it was fun for me, right?

(at the play area at Hollywood Studios)

Claire: Mommy, don’t go this way, ‘cause there’s spiders.

Mommy: I can’t go that way, ‘cause my back hurts.
Alex (to Daddy): Wanna come with me?

Daddy: Do you wanna go somewhere else?
Alex: No, this is a fun place.

Claire: Look Alex, it’s a spider web.
Claire: No, Alex! It’s a spider web!

Claire: I just went – I went through the tunnel!

Claire: Daddy, I can show you something cool.

Claire: Don’t go this way, there’s the sprayers!

Alex: Daddy, can I lie on you if I get tired?

Claire (with Piglet): Daddy, this is a baby, because she’s little.

Daddy: Did you guys have fun today?
Claire and Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: I was bored.
Claire: I was not bored. I was happy.

Claire: Piglet’s a baby, ‘cause she’s little.

Alex: I didn’t know we were going on a bus. I thought we were going on a airplane. I didn’t tell my teachers, ‘cause they were talking about land transportation. I can tell them when I get back.

I love having fun at Disney World!

Claire (eating her French toast, in a sing-song voice): Yummy yummy yummy

Claire: I love having fun at Disney World!

(Claire sees a juggler.)
Claire: Daddy! He's juggled!

(Claire, Alex, Mommy and Daddy are riding on The Land ride at Epcot.)

Claire (to Daddy): Hold on to me.

Claire: Daddy, when we get back home, I’m gonna tell my teachers all about, um, um, I’m gonna tell my teachers all about Disney World.

(The ride is over. This is the first major attraction that hasn’t scared Alex to death.)
Alex: That was fun.
Claire: Yeah, that was so much fun.

Alex: I wanna go again, because I didn’t see everything.
Daddy: Why didn’t you see everything?
Alex: Because I was scared of the dark part.

(The family heads over to the aquarium.)
Alex: Is it dark in the sea?

(Alex has a great time looking at fish in the aquarium.)

Alex: Look at that!

Alex: Take a picture!

Alex: I had enough of the fish. Can you take a picture of Nemo?

(Mommy clips Claire’s fingernails.)
Claire: Mommy, I wanna keep these.
Mommy: Okay.
Claire (smiling): I like my fingernails.

(dinner)
Claire: Mommy? Can I have the wet stuff with buh-matoes in it?
(After some clarifying questions, Mommy determines that Claire wants ketchup.)

Claire: But Daddy, watch what I can do! It’s so, cool!
(Claire holds a book on one hand.)

Monday, January 9, 2012

Daddy, there’s Mickey!

(Claire and Alex are playing with Spider-Man and Green Goblin.)

Spider-Man (c): I'm Spider-Man, I'm nice, save people.
Green Goblin (c): But I'm mean, I throw pumpkins at people.

Claire: I’ll stay with you, at your house, I’ll stay with you forever.

Claire: I'm throwing pumpkins everywhere!

Alex: But Claire, the Green Gogglin made mud come out of the gloog bloog gloggler.

(The family is walking to a playground.)

Claire: How ‘bout I lead the way?
(Pause.)
Claire: Uh, I don’t know which way to go.

Claire: I, only this person, me, I have to be up front.

Claire: But Daddy, I'm leading the way!

(at the playground)
Girl (smiling): This is the first time I'm ever gonna try to get down one of these things.
Alex (gravely): It is kind of dangerous.

I love Disney World!

Mommy: We’re gonna have to go soon.
Claire: Where are we going?
Alex: To see Mickey Mouse and eat breakfast!
Claire: Yay!

Claire: But Daddy, the monorail? It’s funny that it doesn’t have wheels.

(Claire and Alex have breakfast at Chef Mickey’s.)

Claire (very excited): Daddy, there’s Mickey!

Claire (very excited): And Goofy too!

Claire (to herself): I loooove my chocolate milk!

(Alex and Claire are boarding the dinosaur ride at Animal Kingdom.)
Disney World voiceover: Please keep your hands and feet inside the dinosaur at all times.
Alex: I knew they were gonna say that. They always say that on roller coasters.

Alex (at the Dino Land playground): This is a fun place!

(the end of a long day)

Claire: Daddy? I don't think my body needs sleep.

Claire: I love Disney World!

Mommy: Claire, stop yelling at me.
Claire: I'm just whining, that's why I'm tired.

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Where are the rides?

Claire: Daddy, today we're gonna go to Disney World!

Claire: I wanna fall asleep on the airplane.

(Claire is wearing her chocolate-brown shirt.)
Claire: Alex, do you wanna eat some chocolate off my shirt?
Alex: No.
Claire: But, there's no peanuts in it, or nuts!

Claire: Mommy, we turned off the lights, but it’s not scary, it’s just dark in there.

Alex (at the Orlando airport): This is boring.

Claire (at the Orlando airport): Where are the rides?

Alex: Mommy, you’re not gonna (inaudible) and go to the gym anymore, because this is… vacation.

Alex: Claire has two middle names: Sofia, and Bear.

Claire: Daddy, I want you to go on the roller coaster when we get on the bus.
Daddy: You want me to go on the roller coaster?
Claire: No, I want you to go on the roller coaster with me.

Claire: Mommy, you know why I picked chocolate? Because I have a chocolate shirt.

Claire: Mommy! You know what? Someone’s gonna miss me.
Mommy: Oh yeah?
Claire: My friends might miss me, and my teachers might miss me.

Claire: Because I'm gonna be gone for a long time.

Nom nom nom nom nom nom

Claire: Daddy, why is the days go over and over and over again?
Daddy: They just do.

Daddy: Which days?
Claire: All the days, like [Claire holds her arms out wide] this day!

Claire: Daddy, I'm excited ’cause tomorrow we’re going to Disney World!

(Claire is in the bath by herself, playing with toys. The following is just part of a much longer story.)
Elmo (cheerfully): Bye! Thanks for not eating me!
Dragon: Now I’m gonna eat you, because you said “Thanks for not eating me”!
Dragon: Nom nom nom nom nom nom

(Alex is now in the bath too, and his Band-Aid is hanging halfway off.)
Claire: Alex, your Band-Aid is floating!
Alex (laughs): Yeah!
Claire: Does it hurt?
Alex: No.
Claire: Now?
Alex: No.
Claire: Now?
Alex: No.
Claire: Now?
Alex: Claire, stop asking me!

Thursday, January 5, 2012

I'm happy to go to Disney World!!

Alex: Mommy said even if I'm scared to go someplace new, I can wear my favorite shirt.

Claire: I love my new suitcase!

Alex: We're packed for vacation.
Claire: We're not going to vacation, we're going to Disney World!

Claire: I'm happy to go to Disney World!!

Monday, January 2, 2012

Alex did, all by himself.

Claire: Daddy, don’t look at my shirt.
Daddy: Okay.
Claire: It’s a surprise.

(Claire is sad that Mommy’s taking down the Christmas decorations.)
Mommy: You know what else is coming up that’s even better?
Claire: Easter!
Mommy: Yeah, and Disney World.
Claire: Yay!
Alex: Disney, and Easter!
Alex: And Valentine’s Day.
Claire: Yeah.
Alex: And that green day.

(Claire and Alex are playing.)
Claire: I see a bad guy!
Alex: Where?
Claire: Behind you!
(Alex looks around and sees Mommy.)
Claire: That’s just Mommy.
Claire (pointing to an empty space): Right there! He’s just for pretend, Alex.

Alex (sadly): Mommy, every day, when Claire plays with me, it’s her birthday.

Claire (to Mommy, sadly): I want it to be Christmas again.

(Mommy makes cheeseburgers for lunch.)

Claire: I – I wanna try a cheeseburger.

Claire (giggling): Mommy, can we go to the store and get a cheeseburger? Then I wanna have it for dinner.

(Alex spontaneously cleans the play room.)
Alex: Daddy! I cleaned up the play room, all by myself!

(Alex proceeds to clean the train room, then his own room.)

Alex (singing, while cleaning his room): Cleaning my room, cleaning my room…

Alex: I feel proud of myself.

(Alex is cleaning the family room.)
Alex: There’s a lot of toys to put away. But I’m not gonna ask for help. Because I want to do it all by myself.

Alex: Daddy, can you write that on your computer?
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Alex did, all by himself.

(Alex finishes cleaning the family room.)
Alex: Mommy and Daddy don’t have to do any work, so they can just read!

(Alex found more stuff to clean.)
Alex: Look Daddy!
(Daddy looks.)
Alex: It’s getting clean!

Alex: Daddy? Our relaxing place is done!

Claire (helping to clean, a little bit): Super-clean!

Alex: The Super Cleaners made… a clean house!

Alex (relaxing): A good, relaxing place.

Alex: Daddy, come see what I did in the family room.
Claire: Come see what I did in the train room!

Daddy: I love our clean house!

Alex: Uh, Daddy? I think I see another job for Super Cleaners.
Daddy: What’s that?
Alex: Right here – the counter!

Claire: I know what’s so messy. The little table!
Daddy: Oh, you’re right, the little table needs to be cleaned up!
Alex: Super Cleaners to the rescue!

(Daddy is helping a little bit with the cleaning.)
Alex: But, you don’t have to do it, Daddy.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: We’re Super Cleaners. So you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Just leave it to us!

Claire: Daddy, watch me run so fast to the other side!
Daddy: Okay.
(Claire runs from the kitchen to the other side of the family room.)
Daddy: Wow, that was fast!

Claire: Mommy, watch me go, so far all around the house!
(Claire starts running.)
Mommy: Wow, you’re fast!
Claire (whining): But, I didn’t – I didn’t go around the house!

Alex: Uh, where’s the light on the garage? I’m taking out the recycling for you.

(Alex is finally done cleaning, after nearly an hour.)
Alex: Maybe, tomorrow? I’m not gonna make a big mess.

Mommy: All right. I’m gonna make some dinner.
Alex: I can help. Anything you don’t want to do, we can help.
Mommy: Oh that’s nice, buddy.
Claire (with one fist raised above her head): We, are, super heroes!

(Daddy's computer is playing “You Are My Sunshine”.)
Alex: Daddy? I’m like that.
Daddy: Yeah?
Alex: You like me, because I’m helping out right now. And it’s dark out, so the skies are grey right now.
Daddy: Oh!
Elizabeth Mitchell (singing): You make me happy, when skies are gray
Alex: See?

(Alex and Claire are helping Daddy to fold laundry.)
Alex: I should tell my teachers about this.
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: Because they said, maybe you can do something to help out your mommy and daddy.

(after dinner)
Alex: Daddy! You don’t want to clean up the table?
Daddy: I don’t want to clean up the table, I wish I didn’t have to.
Alex: Well, I can help you! And so can Claire!

Claire: Daddy, next time when we go to school, when we have circle time, I can raise my hand, and I can say, I helped Daddy, and Ma – and Ma – and Mommy.

Claire: I’m proud of myself!
Alex: Me too! We, are taking care of our house all by ourselves!
Claire: Yeah! So, you remember that let’s do it next time, okay?
Alex: Okay.

(Alex and Claire wipe down the kitchen table.)

Alex: Mommy! Mommy! Come see the clean table!

Claire: Come and see the clean table! It’s really clean! We wiped it too!

Claire (to Mommy): When I was a baby, I used to go to sleep on Daddy’s shoulder.
Mommy: Yeah.
Alex: I did it lots of times.

Sunday, January 1, 2012

Daddy, I want a tree house door, so I can go down from my room, instead of the stairs.

(Claire wants French toast.)

Mommy: We don’t have any.
Claire: How ‘bout we go to the wedding and get some?

Claire: Mommy, Santa’s still watching us, right?
Mommy: Right.

Mommy (to Daddy): Alex wants to do Saturday morning soccer, and he wants you to take him.
Claire: Can I watch him in my purple chair with the princesses on it?

(Claire is keeping an eye on Alex.)
Alex (to Claire): You’re not a mommy! You’re not apposed to be watching me!

Alex: Daddy, I want a tree house door, so I can go down from my room, instead of the stairs.
Daddy: That would be neat.
Alex: Can we do that?
Daddy: Um, no, I don’t think we can do that, but it’s a neat idea.
Alex: But we could cut a –
Daddy: – Yeah, we could cut a hole in the floor, and have a ladder.
