Um, I play trains!
Daddy: Can you put this down so I can wipe your hand?
Alex: And I will pick it up again.
Alex: Thank you Daddy, thanks for getting my shirt on.
Alex (to Mommy): Can I get in your lap?
Alex: I want some music. It’s playing Mommy, you need to help me.
(Mommy and Alex are looking at pictures of Alex on the computer.)
Mommy: What a cute boy.
Alex (to picture): You’re cute.
(Mommy laughs and gives Alex a kiss.)
Alex (embarrassed): Stop it.
Alex: I wanna look at pictures again. I can’t see the music.
Alex: This is a glove, Mommy.
Daddy: Can Grommie come with us?
Alex: Maybe he can’t come.
Daddy: Yeah, he can't come, he has to stay here.
Alex: He have to stay at my house ‘cause I have to go to Nana and Pop’s and Dana and Camden and Renee and Doug.
Daddy: That’s right.
Alex: I'm being patient, Daddy.
(in the car)
Alex: I don't know where it is. I can't find it. I don’t know where it is.
Daddy: What?
Alex: I don’t know where it is.
Mommy: What are you looking for?
Alex: Nana’s house.
Alex: Fire engine, Daddy! I saw the fire engines!
Daddy: Wow!
Alex: Did you see them?
Daddy: I saw them too!
Alex: That's not a song.
Daddy: Is that a song?
Alex: No.
Alex: That's Kermit the Frog.
Mommy: That’s right.
(Claire is laughing about who knows what.)
Claire: Huh huh huh huh.
Claire: Huh huh huh huh.
Claire: Huh huh huh.
Alex (crossly): It’s not funny.
Alex: Look at him, he's got a rug on him.
(Alex wants to know why Camden is crying.)
Daddy: When you’re sad you cry.
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: And what do you do when you’re happy?
Alex: Um, I play trains!
Alex: It’s late. And Pop, and Nana, and Uncle Doug, and Aunt Renee, and Dana, and Camden, have to sleep.
Mommy: That’s right.
Alex: They have to sleep in their beds.
Alex: I wanna see the sun again.
Alex: Can you make a cave I wake you up? I won’t hurt you.
Alex: Mommy and Daddy are sleeping. Can’t wake them up. I have to hide. (mumble) pillow, hide.
(Alex hides behind a pillow, then comes out.)
Alex: Wake up!
Alex (to Mommy): I wanna run to you and knock you down.
(The following remarks were interspersed throughout Mommy’s reading of Bubble Hunt. Mommy’s replies are mostly omitted.)
Alex: What's – what's – what’s he saying?
Alex: What – what’s that – fish – what’s that f–…
Mommy: Seahorse.
Alex: Seahorse gonna do?
Alex: What's Nemo gonna do too?
Alex: What’s he gonna do too?
Alex: What’s he’s gonna do too?
Alex: What’s he’s gonna do too?
Alex: What’s she saying too?
Alex: What he’s saying?
Alex: What he’s saying?
Alex: What he’s saying?
Alex: What’s – what’s he saying?
Alex: Who’s that?
Alex: What he’s saying to that fish?
(song time)
Alex: Sing the chair climbed up the wall and he went through the window, ‘cause he went down the hill, ‘cause he had to hide, ‘cause he climbed up the wall, ‘cause he was too high. Okay?
Alex: Can we look at... um... trouble, be Gordon, mud.
Alex: I wanna play in the backyard, and play in the playroom, and play trains, and… I’m a big boy.
