And you saw a pretty big elephant?
Alex: I don't wanna wake up yet.
(leaving for school)
Alex (to Claire): Bye-bye, pah-pah. See you later, pah-pah.
Alex (to Mommy): That’s pah-pah, Mommy.
Alex: Bye, pah-pah. No that’s Claire. Bye, Claire.
Alex: I got a new flower.
Alex: I got a happy stamp!
Alex: You wanna play with Daisy, Daddy?
(dinner time)
Alex (to Daddy): What would you take on a desert island?
(Daddy laughs.)
Mommy: What did he say?
Daddy: He asked me what I would take on a desert island.
Daddy (to Alex): I would take Alex.
Alex: You take a shoe?
Daddy: A shoe?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: I would take a shoe. What would you take?
Alex: I was - I was gonna take a bag.
Daddy: Thank you for my dinner, sweetie.
Mommy: You're welcome.
(Pause.)
Daddy: Alex? Is there anything you want to say to Mommy?
Alex: Yeah.
Alex (to Mommy): May I have some more applesauce please?
Alex: I will be a baby.
Daddy: Yeah?
Alex (in a baby voice): Ma-ma-ma-mee.
Alex: I just be a baby.
Alex's spoon: I can't see. 'Cause I'm covered with applesauce.
Alex (to Daddy): Can you help make the ducky bathtub? So I can swim with Claire?
Daddy: Alex, can I ask you a question?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: What sound does it make?
Alex: Ch ch.
Daddy: Now Alex ask Daddy a question.
Alex: Daddy, what you did?
Daddy: I went to work today.
Alex: What you did in the forest?
Daddy: I went for a walk.
Alex: What did you see?
Daddy: I saw trees and bushes and squirrels.
Alex: And you saw a pretty big elephant?
Daddy: That's right, I saw a pretty big elephant.
Alex: And you saw a bug?
Daddy: Yeah, I saw a bug.
Alex: And trucks?
Daddy: And trucks.
Alex: And cars?
Daddy: And cars.
Alex: And tigers?
Daddy: And tigers, I saw tigers.
Alex: And bears? And they talk to you?
Daddy: Yeah, the bears talked to me.
Alex: And the bears wanna do something else? 'Cause they're sleeping?
(Daddy is trying to convince Alex to eat his grilled cheese sandwich.)
Daddy: I'm not gonna eat it.
Alex: Maybe you can eat your telephone.
Daddy: I'm not gonna eat my telephone.
Alex: How 'bout your napkin?
Cookie Monster: I wanna rinse 'cause I'm all soapy. Look at me. Look at my shirt.
Alex: You go hide and make a funny noise and -- and I was gonna hear that and (mumble) "It's Daddy!"
Mommy: Okay, I think its time for stories.
Alex (whining): No! I wanna make a cave and hide in the sleep sack.
(song time)
Daddy: Let's sing another song.
Alex: The door, and the window was too close to the door. And it felled from the school (mumble).
Daddy: Let's sing something else. Mommy?
Mommy: Um... How about "C is for Cookie"?
Alex: Okay.
(Mommy and Daddy sing.)
Daddy: Okay, let's sing one more song and then do kisses. Let's sing Twinkle Twinkle.
Alex: No. Sing the door, and the window was too close to the door and it felled from the school.
(Daddy sings the requested song.)
(in bed)
Alex: I'm a big boy... and I... and I... and I... play trains...
Alex: I can't rest. I can't rest, Daddy.
Daddy: Well, you don't have to rest. You can just close your eyes and think. You can talk to Elly and Bobo.
Alex: What can I talk to them about?
Daddy: You can talk to them about toys, and what you did today, and what you want to do tomorrow.
Alex: What do you wanna do?
Daddy: I wanna go to sleep, and eat breakfast, and go to school.
Alex: What do you wanna do after school?
Daddy: I wanna play trains and go in the backyard.
Alex: And play in the playroom.
Daddy: And play in the playroom.
