Why do I have this plate?

Alex: Elly and Bobo have boo-boos.

(Claire finds an empty Gatorade bottle on the table.)
Claire: Bobble. Daddy.

(Alex is in his chair, and Daddy goes to turn off the TV.)
Alex: I wanna turn off it. When I get down.
(Claire gets the remote and takes it to Alex.)

Mommy: Can you tell Daddy what you ate at the doctor?
Alex: I ate candy!
Mommy: What kind of candy?
Alex: Um... Red!

Alex: Monster, you go in your cave over there.
Daddy: Oh, over here?
Alex: Don't scare me.

Daddy: Alex, what's tomorrow?
(Pause.)
Mommy: You don't know?
Daddy: What happens after nap?
Alex (tentatively): Birthday.
Mommy: That’s right!
Daddy: Whose birthday?
Alex: Alex!
Daddy: Alex's!
Alex: Is it gonna be sunny?
Daddy (to Mommy): Is it gonna be sunny?
Alex: Yeah.
Mommy: I don’t know.

Daddy: You can tell Miss Woody, “I’m three!” And tell Miss Arnold, “I’m three!” And you can tell Everett, “I’m three!”
Alex: I will tell Everett, um Everett will say, “Are you two?” “No, I’m three, Everett.”

(dinner time)

Alex: At school yesterday I heard the music far away and it was Let It Snow, Daddy.

Alex: But, then I heard it after the other nap and then I heard it someone was singing on that card.

(Although Alex usually has a plate that’s divided into three sections, today he has a plate with four sections, and one of the sections is empty.)
Alex (indicating the empty section): What goes in here?
Daddy: Nothing goes in there.
Alex: But what goes in here?
Daddy: Nothing does.
Alex: But, some food goes in there.
Daddy: No food goes in there tonight.
Alex: Why do I have this plate?

Alex: Can I watch Mary Poppins?

Alex: After dinner we’re gonna do mask.
Daddy: Are we?
Alex: Yeah. I have a bad cough. And I need to do my mask.
Daddy: Okay. Did Mommy say so?
Mommy: What?
Alex: I need to do my mask.

Daddy (showing bananas to Claire and Alex): What's this?
Alex: Bananas.
Daddy: What's this, Claire?
Claire: Nana.
Daddy (showing an apple): What's this?
Claire: Ah-poo.
Alex: Apple.
Daddy: That’s right!
Daddy (showing a pear): What's this?
Claire: Ah-poo.
Alex: Pear.
Daddy: Pear!
Daddy (holding a Gatorade bottle): What's this?
Claire: Bobble.
Alex: Egg.

(Daddy gets Claire down from the table.)
Alex: Is Claire gonna go see Mama?
Daddy: What?
Alex: Is Claire gonna go see Mama?
Daddy: Yeah, she might. Do you think she should go see Mama?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: She really loves Mama, doesn't she?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: And you love Mama too, right?
Alex: Yeah.
Alex: I love Daddy!
Daddy: Aw, and I love Alex.
Alex: Dogs don't give hugs.
Daddy: No they don't. What do they do?
Alex: They um walk, but they don't have any hands.

(Alex runs into Mommy’s and Daddy’s bed and hurts his knee.)
Daddy: I'm sorry, our bed has a hard part that you can bump your knees on.
Alex: But I need to bump a little bit, but not a big bit.

Alex: I'm done um, cleaning this room.

Alex: I have a fever in my nose.

Alex: Claire made a mess over here.

Alex: I cleaned up a little bit of my room. My room was a little bit messy.

(bed time)

Alex: Will you cut up my cake for me?
Daddy: You want me to cut up your cake for you? Okay.
Alex: And I want ice cream!

Alex: I want my cake cut up.
(Mommy’s reply is inaudible.)
Alex: I want big ice cream.

Mommy: We’ll have your cake and ice cream after dinner. Okay?
Alex: I want my cake on the table.

Alex: Is Franklin gonna be at my party?
