There you are. Happy Birthday, Daddy!

(in the car on the way to school)

Alex: When I'm in the car I hear noises.

Claire: Daddy? Daddy? Hat!

Alex: You choose the car you like, and Mommy chooses the other car Mommy likes?
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: You choose cars?
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: When you choose cars, you share.
Daddy: That's right!

Alex: I see ducks in the sky, flying!

Alex: The card doesn't work anymore.
Daddy: Yeah. Why not?
Alex: Because everyone touched it, a lot.

(Daddy comes home from work.)
Alex: There you are. Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Alex: Happy Birthday!
Daddy: Thank you Alex! Claire, can you say “Happy Birthday”?
Alex: Here's your present and there's your other present. And here's your card.
Daddy: Oh, thank you!
Alex: There's your cupcakes.
Daddy: Wow! You thought of everything, Alex!
Alex: Grandma was here.

Daddy: What did you do after nap today?
Alex: I didn't garden.
Daddy: Did Grandma garden?
Alex: No, she went to run errands while I was napping.
Daddy: Oh, okay.
Alex: And then she came back.
Alex: And then I didn't - I didn't um garden.

Alex: Can I have a cupcake now?

Alex: Who gave those to you?
Daddy: Mommy.
Alex: Mommy?
Daddy: Mommy.
Alex: Say “thank you”, Daddy.
Daddy: Thank you for my cupcakes, Mommy.

(dinner time)

Daddy: How old am I, Alex?
Alex: How old are you?
Daddy: Well, it's my birthday, so how old do you think I am?
Alex: Um. Thirty minute.
Daddy: Thirty minutes?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: I'm thirty minutes old.

Alex: Cupcakes! We’re having cupcakes?
Claire: Aw cake!
Alex: Cupcakes! You open them, Mommy.

Mommy: What do you do when it's somebody's birthday? Before they eat their cake?
Alex: Um, you fix it.
Mommy: What else?
Alex: And, you put candles on it.
Mommy: Yeah.

(Mommy brings out the cupcakes.)

Claire (pointing to her tray): Aw eh. Aw eh.

Alex: Is that mine?
Mommy: Yeah.
Alex: Uh is that Claire’s, over there?
Mommy: Yeah.
Claire: Mines.
Alex: Yeah that's yours. And that's mine.
Claire: My.
Alex: No, that's mine.
Claire: My.
Alex: Mine!
Mommy: Okay, cut that out.
Alex: Claire’s having two cupcakes.
Mommy: No, she's getting one. Everybody gets one.

Mommy: All right. Cupcakes.
Claire: Cuh-cakes. Uh cake. Uh cake.
Alex: I - I cut it up.
Mommy: All right, good job.
Claire: Uh cake.
Mommy: Cake.
Claire: Daddy.

Alex: I want more.
Mommy: No more, we just get one each.
Claire: Aw more. Aw more cuh-cuh.

Daddy: What color is the sky?
Alex: Uh, blue. And when it turns blue, red, purple, yellow… you can see the pretty colors up there.

Alex: Do you wanna do Thanksgiving before Christmas?
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: At Sesame Street's house. And then we'll go to Cat in the Hat's house.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: (mumble) Green Eggs and Ham's house.

Alex: Daddy?
Daddy: Yeah?
Alex: Here’s the food, we're getting for Thanksgiving.
(Alex wanders off and talks to himself.)
Alex (to himself): Where’s the cake? And muffins too.
Alex (picking up imaginary objects): Some. Some.
Alex (to himself): And that's milk. And that's… that's it? Or… there's water in this (mumble). I have muffins in here. Uhhh. Oh I have muffins over here.
Alex: Which one is yours?
Alex: Um…
Alex (handing Daddy a cup): Uh, water.
(Alex drinks from his own cup.)
Alex (handing Daddy a cup): This is uh milk. Muffins.
Daddy: Thank you.
(Alex drinks from one cup, then another.)
Alex: And that was Thanksgiving so let's go… to Christmas. I'm gonna take your cup.
(Alex takes Daddy's cup.)
Daddy: Thank you.

Alex: Is that your dog card?

Alex: Claire's not sharing. Claire's not sharing.

(Alex is weighing himself on the bathroom scale.)

Alex: What am I?
Daddy: Thirty-five.
Alex: No I’m thirty, E.

Alex: What am I now?
Daddy: Thirty-five.
Alex: Can I see?
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: Thirty one two three four. And E.

(Mommy tells Alex about going to the mall to tell Santa what you want for Christmas.)

Alex: Go to the mall and tell him and then come back.

Alex: I want a house and a dog and a Mommy and a Daddy and a boy and a girl and a baby.

Alex: The house is over by the wall, and I need a dog too. Tell Santa that.

(bed time)
Alex: Tell me last time what we’re gonna do before Santa.

(in bed, overheard over the monitor)
Alex: Mommy was happy and Alex was happy.
