(Mommy and Daddy wake up a bleary-eyed Alex by singing “Happy Birthday” to him.)
Alex (blearily): Thank you.
Alex: I want to go downstairs and see my presents.
Alex: It’s my Hiro! That I wanted!
Alex: You always don’t get dressed on your birthday.
Alex: I’ll see you at my party, Mommy!
Mommy: I’m gonna pick you up from school.
Alex: Oh. I’ll see you at my party too.
Alex: A present is a gift!
Daddy: That’s right!
Alex: On your birthday it’s a gift!
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: And on Santa day too!
(Claire and Daddy have some special time after school, while Mommy makes a second trip to the school to pick up Alex.)
Claire: I ate sausage at school!
Daddy: Wow, you ate sausage?
Claire: Yeah. And bread.
Daddy: Yeah?
Claire: And… and… what else did I eat at school?
Daddy: I don’t know what you ate.
Claire: Maybe eggs. I ate eggs at school.
(Claire is wearing her striped/polka-dot socks.)
Claire: I like these socks, Daddy.
Claire: Polka-dots on my, on my foot!
Daddy: What?
Claire: Polka-dots. It’s from my socks!
Daddy: Aw, you’re cute!
Claire: That’s silly.
Claire: You are big, and Mommy is big too. And Alex is big too. And I am little.
Claire: Daddy, can you play with me?
(Daddy and Claire play with the Calico Critters house.)
(Claire picks up the grandfather clock.)
Claire: This is a clock, it say “ding dong, ding dong!”
Daddy: That’s right!
Claire: Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong.
Claire: Where’s a blanket? I found a blanket! Him needs a pillow.
Claire: There his blanket. And him sleeping.
(Claire picks up the bin with additional Calico Critters furniture and such.)
Claire: I want this bin.
Daddy: Okay, you get it. Do you want me to open it or do you wanna open it?
Claire: I wanna open it.
Daddy: Okay.
Claire: I’m strong.
Claire: I can’t open it. It keeps closing.
Daddy: Yeah.
Claire: I need help.
Daddy: Okay.
Claire: Him need a table. Him hungry.
(Grommie runs around whimpering.)
Claire: Who’s that? Who’s that?
Daddy: Maybe it’s Mommy, home with Alex.
Claire: I don’t see garage opened. Don’t hear it.
Daddy: Me either.
Claire: Yeah.
(A little later, Claire hears Alex and Mommy coming home.)
Claire: Dat dem! Alex!
Claire: We’re home! We’re playing with the house!
Alex: Oh.
Alex: I’m gonna open the last present. But, I thought you were coming – coming to my birthday, but, I know they are but, they might not have a present for me but, I didn’t ask them.
Mommy: Yeah, they might not have presents for you, and that’s okay.
Alex: Okay, but – I think they do.
Claire: Another red one! Another red one! Another red plate!
Daddy: Yeah!
Claire: Another chair!
(Alex is rushing into the bathroom, talking to himself.)
Alex: Open the door. Hurry, before I pee in my pants.
(Alex opens a present.)
Claire: Wowwww! A new train!
Alex: But – I don’t know how to put it together.
Alex: Hey Claire? On mornings, you need to be nice on mornings, because it’s my birthday, and you need to be nice on birthdays.
(Daddy is wiping Alex’s bottom during nap time. Claire is napping, so Alex is whispering.)
Alex: Did you see my yucky poop?
Daddy: Yeah, I saw your yucky poop.
Alex: Poop is always yucky.
Alex: I like my new train, Hiro. He’s always black.
(Alex goes back to his bed.)
Alex: I want a hug and a kiss.
Daddy: Okay.
(Daddy gives Alex a hug and a kiss.)
Alex: See you on my birthday!
(Before going to the party, Alex tells Daddy about Chuck E. Cheese’s.)
Alex: There’s lots of rides, there’s Clifford, and fire truck, and a school bus… and Scoop!
Alex: And after you put a quarter in, when you get inside you can put a quarter in, and then, when you put a quarter in, um, um, it goes, and then you have fun riding. And you put a Clifford um, you get on Clifford and then you put a quarter in, and if you want to go, you can, but, then, you put a quarter in and you go, and then you have fun ride on it. You see, that’s a fun place, Callum told me about it, Callum told me to Mommy, but, I don’t think she did, I don’t think she did.
Alex: Is Santa gonna come today, because I already had my birthday.
Daddy: Hurry, Alex!
Alex: Don’t – don’t say that to me, ‘cause it’s still my birthday.
(Later, Alex and Claire are arguing.)
Claire: No!
Alex: Don’t say that to me, it’s still my birthday!
