Alex: My own Claire’s gone commercial.
(Alex claims Claire is sick.)
Alex: Hey Daddy, I think she should watch TV. ‘Cause she's sick. You always watch TV when you’re sick.
(dinner)
(Alex and Claire are arguing, because Claire won’t say what Alex wants her to say.)
Alex (to Claire): Say it right now!
Claire: It right now!
Claire: I’m all done.
Daddy: But you didn’t eat very much, Claire.
Claire: I’m not hungry.
Alex: Tell me all the vowels, please.
(Alex and Daddy are watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. Linus begins explaining the true meaning of Christmas.)
Alex: He’s talkin’ weird. What are -- ? Are those words?!
(Daddy is putting Alex to bed.)
Alex: Hey Daddy?
Daddy: Yeah buddy.
Alex: Who puts the words in the books?
(Alex is in bed, but talks downstairs over the monitor.)
Alex: Hey Mommy? I wanna ask you something. If you lose your tooth, you won’t be able to brush teeth, what do you do?
(Mommy goes upstairs to talk to Alex.)
Alex: Um, if you lose your tooth, what will you do? You won’t be able to brush your teeth.
(Mommy explains about baby teeth and adult teeth, and the tooth fairy.)
Alex: But money’s not my favorite. I want a toy.
Mommy: Yeah but if you have money, you can buy a toy.
Alex: Oh.
(The following are selected snippets from the same conversation.)
Alex: Why does it happen when you’re six?
Alex: How – how will my mouth grow?
Alex: Well – is it gonna hurt, just like my – my leg hurts because it’s growing.
Alex: I – when I – when you sleep, your stuff grows.
Alex: I might need some medicine, right?
Mommy: Um, I don’t think so.
Alex: Well I might get sick if I don’t get medicine, if my leg’s still hurting, I think.
Alex: Can you feel my leg?
Mommy: Well I can’t feel what you feel. I can’t feel the pain.
Alex: What’s pain?
Mommy: It’s the hurt.
Alex: What does the pain do?
Mommy: It makes you hurt.
(Alex laughs.)
Alex: Oh.
Alex: Silly.
