I put the ceiling on the floor.

Alex: Daddy, macaroni!
(Alex pretends to hand something to Daddy.)
Daddy: Thank you!
(Daddy eats the “macaroni”.)
Alex (handing over another imaginary object): Applesauce.
(Daddy eats the “applesauce”.)
Alex (handing over another imaginary object): Brocky-sauce.
(Daddy eats the “brocky-sauce”.)
Alex (handing over another imaginary object): And, pork.
Daddy: Thank you.
(Daddy eats the “pork”.)
Alex: No more. I’m gonna go find some more, next time.

Alex (calling): Grover!
Claire (calling): Grover! Grover!
Alex: I’m tryin’ to find Grover, Daddy.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Grover’s somewhere else.

Alex: We’re just sitting here, Daddy.

Alex (walking down the stairs, holding the railing): It is working, Daddy. Holding the railing, I do! I can do it myself!

Alex (talking to Mommy’s step): Leave me alone. Stool.

(Daddy is buckling Claire into her car seat.)
Claire: Uh book.
Daddy: You want your book? I’ll get you your book, after I get you buckled in.
Daddy: What’s in your book?
Claire (not looking at the book yet): Duck.
Daddy: Yeah!
Claire: Cheese.
Daddy: That’s right!
(Pause.)
Daddy: What else?
Claire: Girl.
Daddy: Right!

Alex: Daddy, may you come play with me?

(Daddy and Alex have been making up stories about Thomas and friends, but it’s now time for nap.)
Alex: Um, after nap, we can talk about more stories, okay?

Alex: Bones are biscuits. My teacher says that at school.

Alex: Don’t go on the town, Daddy, you’re gonna go on a trip next time.

(Alex asked Daddy to make a stickprint a while ago, but Daddy got distracted and hasn’t done it yet.)
Alex: Can you make me a stickprint?
Daddy: Yeah, I’m gonna make you a stickprint, buddy.
Alex: I’m just talking about it. For a long time because you’re not doing it.

Alex: Next time, did I put the ceiling on the floor, Mommy?
Mommy: What did you do?
Alex: I put the ceiling on the floor.

Alex: Did I put the ceiling on the floor, Daddy? When I ran too fast?
Daddy: Um, yeah you did.
Alex: Can you do that?
Daddy: You want me to put the ceiling on the floor?
Alex: Yeah.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Noooo!

Daddy: Alex, next time, did I put the ceiling on the floor?
Alex: No, I did that.
Daddy: Can you show me? I wanna see.
Alex (reaching up): Ugh. I can’t reach.
Daddy: Oh, you can’t reach.
Alex: Maybe next time you can throw me on the ceiling and I can bring it down.

(dinner time)

Claire (while signing “more”): I want more nuggets.

Alex: Can I -- can you turn the ceiling upside-down, Mommy?
Mommy: Can I what?
Alex: Can you turn the ceiling upside-down?
Mommy: Oh wait – I can do it.
(Mommy turns Alex’s head upside-down, sort of.)
Mommy: Did that work?
Alex: No. No that real ceiling, in our house.

(in bed)
Alex: I will tell your words and then I will tell my words.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Get up, eat breakfast, Daddy will take me to school – wait, can we play for a little bit?
Daddy: Yeah, we can play for a little bit before school.
Alex: And after I play for a little bit, Daddy will take me to school, I will play with my friends, Mommy will pick me up, Mommy will put Claire down for nap, then Mommy will put me down for nap after songs and stories, and I might sleep.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: That’s the end. Of my story.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Now I will say my words.
