(Daddy and Claire walk into Alex’s classroom, where Alex and Neer are sitting on the bench.)
Claire: Neer back!
(Daddy, Claire, and Alex walk out of the school, to find the stroller waiting for them.)
Claire: Stroller back! Stroller back!
Alex: I didn’t get a bike today.
Alex: Hey Claire, you look really pretty in that hat.
Mommy: Aw, that’s nice, Alex.
Alex: But she looks really pretty.
(Alex is playing with sticks on the picnic table at the cul-de-sac.)
Alex (showing Daddy a stick): You see this one? It has letters on it. It says, “You need to build a big seesaw, that someone’s building, if you need a big seesaw.” Okay?
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: So you need to build it.
Alex: It takes the other sticks to make some more stickles.
(Alex rides all the way home on his tricycle! This is the first time he’s really ridden it outside.)
Daddy: Alex, did you tell Mommy what you did?
Alex (emphatically): I, ride, all the way home!!
(bed time)
Alex: But I wanna say my words.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: Play eyebrow. That’s a new one.
Daddy: Okay.
Alex: What was the one that I said before the other nap?
Daddy: Play toe.
Alex: And play toe… and play hair… and play head… and bang on the door… and play air… and play doggie… and play chickie… and now go to sleep – and look at pictures.
