Ummm... birthday!

Claire (crying repeatedly on the way to school): Uh play at home!

Alex: I see the flag blowing in the breeze!

Alex: They're driving in the trees. They're driving in the woods. That's silly, a car can't drive in the woods!

(Claire leads everyone into the house.)
Claire: C'mon Mommy. C'mon Daddy Ay-yah. C'mon Grommie. C'mon Grommie.

(Alex and Claire are playing trains. Alex starts singing.)
Alex: Shunting trucks and hauling freight
Alex: Red and green and brown and blue
Alex: They're a useful useful crew
Alex: All with (mumble) roles to play
Alex: What else, Daddy?
Daddy: Round Tidmouth Sheds...
Alex: Round the Tidmouth Shed, far away
Alex: Down the hills and round the bends
Alex: Thomas and his friends
Daddy: Good job, Alex!

(Alex pooped on the potty. Claire heads into the kitchen for her chocolate.)
Claire: Uh get my chocolate, Daddy.
Daddy: Alex'll get it for you. Or I will, if he can't reach it.
Alex: I can scoot it over to myself. I'm big as a giant. So I can do it.

Daddy, may I have Mommy's doll that her Grandma gave her?

(nap time)

Alex: Play head, and play eye, and play nose, and I will be really mad, and don't turn off your light, and don't close your door, and, and… and don't close your door, I mean -- mess with books, and play door, and play house… and look at pictures, and now go to sleep. And play on the floor and play on the ceiling.
Daddy: Okay, night-night, I love you.
Alex: I love you too.
Alex: And play light.

(dinner time)

Daddy: Claire, do you know what today is?
Claire: Ummm… birthday!
Daddy: That's right! Whose birthday is it?
Claire: Juju!

Mommy: What's today, Claire?
Claire: Friday!

Mommy: What's today?
Claire: Tomorrow.

Mommy: What's today?
Claire: Claire.
Mommy: Claire?
Claire: Yeah.
Mommy: Is it your birthday?
Claire: Yeah.

(Alex spontaneously starts singing, showing the right number of fingers each time.)
Alex (singing): Four little monkeys jumpin’ on the bed
Alex (singing): One fell off and bumped his head
Alex (singing): Mommy called the doctor and the doctor said
Alex (singing): “No more monkeys jumpin’ on the bed!”
Alex (singing): Three little monkeys jumpin’ on the bed
Alex (singing): One fell off and bumped his head
Alex (singing): Mommy called the doctor and the doctor said
Alex (singing): “No more monkeys jumpin’ on the bed!”
Alex: And -- what else?
Mommy: Two.
Alex (singing): Two little monkeys jumpin’ on the bed
Alex (singing): One fell off and bumped his head
Alex (singing): Mommy called the doctor and the doctor said
Alex (singing): “No more monkeys jumpin’ on the bed!”
Alex (singing): One little monkey jumpin’ on the bed
Alex (singing): One fell off and bumped his head
Alex (singing): Mommy called the doctor and the doctor said…
(Claire and Alex sing the last line together.)
Alex (singing): “No more monkeys jumpin’ on the bed!”
Claire (singing): “No more jumpin' on the bed!”

Claire: Campbell eating.
Mommy: Campbell was eating?
Claire: Yeah.

Claire: Ashleigh eating.
Mommy: Ashleigh was eating?
Claire: Yeah.
Claire: Dylan eating.
Mommy: Dylan was eating?
Claire: Yeah.
Claire: Iha eating.
Mommy: Iha was eating?
Claire: Yeah.

Daddy (to Alex): Alex, don't tell her, cause I wanna see if Claire knows how old she is.
Daddy (to Claire): Claire, how old are you?
Claire: Three!
Daddy: Three? And how old is Alex?
Claire: Four.
Daddy: How old is Daddy?
Claire: Nine.
Daddy: How old is Mommy?
Claire: Four.
Daddy: How old is Grommie?
Claire: Night.
Daddy: What?
Claire: One!

(Mommy points the camera at Claire.)
Claire: Uh say cheese.

Claire: Uh get picture uh birthday.
Mommy: You want me to get a picture of you eating your birthday cake?
Claire: Cheese!
Claire: Uh see it.

Alex: I like the icing.
Mommy: I do too.
Claire: I like uh icing.
Alex (to Mommy): I like you because you're icing.

Claire: Uh see Claire eating.

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

You go to one, you go to two, and you go to three. Isn't that funny?

Claire (crying repeatedly on the way to school): Uh play at home!

Alex: Elly's cold. I like it when she's cold. It feels nice.

Alex: The window's so you don't fall out the window.
Alex: The screen's so you don't fall out the window if someone opens it.

Claire: Pee come out!
Alex: On the TV?
Claire: No -- on the diaper. See? See?

Alex (to Claire): I'm gonna show you how to go to two.
Alex (counting on his fingers): You go to one, you go to two, and you go to three. Isn't that funny?

Alex: Can you – can you – can you make dinner for Grommie now?

Monday, June 28, 2010

Uh Ay-yah be happy.

(Claire, Mommy, and Daddy are downstairs. Alex is upstairs by himself, screaming and crying.)
Claire: Uh Ay-yah come down.
Daddy: Alex will come down when he's ready.
Claire: Uh Ay-yah be happy.
Daddy: Aw, that's sweet.
Claire: Ay-yah be happy.
Mommy: Awww.

(Claire is pretending to eat dinner at the little table.)
Claire (looking down on the floor): Strawberry down there.
Claire: Uh get it.
(Claire picks up an imaginary strawberry with her foot.)

Claire: Uh get you, Daddy!
Daddy: Oh no, you're gonna get me!
Claire: Bird get you!
(Claire grabs Daddy with "bird hands".)

Claire: Rain, Daddy! Rain coming!
Daddy: Yeah!
Alex: The rain’s already raining! The weather got all wet.

Claire: Uh thunder come, boom!
(Claire laughs.)

(Alex is holding a yoga block in front of him, saying nothing.)
Daddy: What's that, Alex?
Alex: I'm getting, this is the part o' pea. I'm getting peas in my garden.

(Alex and Claire are looking out the window at the rain.)
Alex: Pitter pot, pitter pot, pitter drop.
Claire: Pitter pop, pitter pop.

Alex: I said that Daddy, when you were in the playroom. Where the trains are.
Daddy: Yeah, what's that room called?
Alex: The second playroom.

Alex (pointing to dots on the back of his pizza): Daddy? If there's one here and one here and one here, that makes a face on your face.
Daddy: Yeah.
Alex: There's a nose and your eyes.

Claire: Uh knock it down. Kay? Uh knock it.
(Claire knocks it down.)
Claire: Daddy, uh knock it down. See?
Daddy: Good job!
Claire: Uh knock it down again.

(A little later, Claire starts to put the blocks away.)
Claire: Uh put it away. Uh put it away, Daddy.
Daddy: Okay, you put it away.
Claire: All done.

(Alex is still eating snack; Claire has finished, and starts to push a stroller.)
Alex: Okay, we can play strollers. Hey Claire, I need to eat the rest of my strawberries, okay?
Claire: ‘Kay.
(Alex eats a strawberry; Claire waits.)
Claire (to Alex): Eat another one.

(Claire and Alex are pushing strollers. Claire stops to pick up the toy phone.)

Daddy: What do you wanna say?
Claire: Say bye to water.
Daddy: Say bye to the water, then.

Mommy (to Claire): How did you get so silly?
Alex: Mommy and Daddy made me.

(dinner time)

Alex: I'm a peach. Hey Daddy?
Daddy: Yes, Alex?
(Alex is holding his arms straight out in front of him, and has his eyes closed.)
Alex: I'm a green bean!
Daddy (laughing): Good job!
Alex: Is that how a green bean is?
Daddy: Yeah, exactly!
Claire: Uh green bean!
(Claire holds her arms out.)
Alex (to Claire): You're a green bean. Close your eyes.

(Alex laughs.)

Alex: It starts with C.
Mommy: What starts with C?
Alex: Cowboy and carrots.
Mommy: Yeah!

(Alex is trying to twist his hand around at an impossible angle.)
Alex: Um, how can I turn my hand over?
Mommy: Well, there's only so far it can go.
Alex: Look, I can't turn my hand over.
Daddy: Yeah, I don't think you're supposed to.
Alex: Why?
Daddy: It doesn't go that way.
Alex: I wanna do a different duck. I don't like this duck.

(Alex is walking around with Daddy's Nintendo DS in its case.)
Alex: I'm going to work, Daddy.
(Claire walks around holding the remote control.)
